The Globes

The Golden Globes aired Sunday January 17th and it wasn't THAT bad.
Not that I assumed it would be, but honestly I never stayed awake for an entire award show before.
So, here we go....

What You Missed
  • Some amazing and not so amazing outfits.
  • If you missed E!'s pre-show, you didn't miss much, but Seacrest rushing celebrities and cutting them off whenever someone he dubbed more important came along: "Right, Thats great- Oh Look George Clooney."
  • Robert Downey Jr. making a hilarious speech: "I don't have anybody to thank. These guys, they needed me! Avatar was gonna take us to the cleaners. If they didn't have me they didn't have a shot, buddy!"
  • Rookie comedy/musical beating The Office and vet 30 Rock for the comedy win. ( I love Glee!)
  • A sweet speech from Meryl Streep as she beat herself for best actress in a comedy, because lets be honest she was her only real contender (her kiss with Sandra Bullock at the Critics Awards was more publicized)
  • Leo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro presenting Martin Scorsese, with a montage I really appreciated.( And from the looks of it he did too!)
  • George Clooney looking extremley bored and over the entire award show scene: Jason Reitman: "George doesn't even want to be here tonight. He wishes he was in a soundstage setting up 20,000 phone lines for a benefit for Haiti right now." Right on.
  • A lot of Celebs getting the word out about supporting Haiti. (see previous post)
  • Drew Berrymore accepting her award not only surprised but nervous and extremely humble.
  • Rookie Monique winning for Best Supporting actress.
  • Tarantino's table of vengeful "Basterds" ( I only say this because I think they got snubbed") Eli Roth(who looks like Zachary Quinto to me): “They don’t really feed you — it’s just champagne. Everyone’s drinking it all night. It’s incredible. You look around, and there’s Fergie and Mariah Carey and Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman.” I guess they were close to the Nine table.
  • Speaking of which it was a pretty horrible set up: It took 5 minutes to get to the stage and they played them off before they could finish. Except Robert Downey Jr. of course "If you start playing violinsI am going to tear this joint apart" and James Cameron "They are telling me to wrap it up, but they are afraid to start the music!"
  • Ricky Gervais was okay, the celebs seemed to enjoy him more. Some things he said were pretty funny. He made fun of a lot of celebrities including his public pretend "rival" of the American 'Office' Steve Carell and the legendary Beatle Paul Mccartney: “We actually came over on the same flight, I didn’t get to speak to him because I was up the front in first class. He was behind me in coach — saving money. He spent an awful lot last year."(a joke aimed at his divorce...he got a few boos for that one but apparently Mccartney appreciated it. Not that one could tell from his facial expression as they cut to him.)
So those were the Globes.

Here are my recommendations:

You like Blood and Gore? : Inglorious Basterds (pretty good story)
Sentimental w/ Comedy?: It's Complicated or Up In The Air (the latter was better)
High school musical w/ real world problems: Glee (test the first episode if you must)
Animated gold w/ an equally depressing and inspiring plot: Up!
Ready for some perfect visual effects w/ subpar acting and a cool story?: Avatar
Out there raunchy above average comedy: The Hangover (you gotta love Andy...it's an Office thing)

I ALWAYS recommend Lost and the Office, two of my favorite shows.
Get ready for Vampire Diaries Thursday, January 21st and the final season of Lost Tuesday Feb. 2nd.
